With guns blazing, the Fighting Maroons just carved the season's first wire-to-wire win.

The UP men's basketball team cruised to a thorough 81–66 victory against University of the East in the UAAP Season 84 men's basketball tournament, Saturday afternoon at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

The Fighting Maroons installed their largest spread at 30, 65–35, during the third quarter behind relentless finishes in transition by the trio of Zavier Lucero, Ricci Rivero, and CJ Cansino.

In what seemed a seamless path to the win, Clint Escamis and Kyle Paranada sparked an 11–2 run to start the final period for UE. The frantic rally enabled the Red Warriors to trim the deficit to 11 at 79–66.

Fortunately, UP’s firepower from their starters kept the Red Warriors far from striking distance en route to being winless in four outings, as Malick Diouf and Carl Tamayo made the insurance baskets to seal the win.

Kaya nahabol din kami kasi kulang pa kami sa consistency na kailangan pa namin baguhin. Sobrang okay yung first half, bigla naman kami nag hiwalay sa sistema, Cansino said of that huge UE run in the payoff period.

Head coach Goldwin Monteverde believes that the streak can be attributed to the team’s constant sharing of the ball and trusting one another.

Compared to our first game, we’re moving the ball better as a team. Nagi-improve kami with consistent effort, the first-year mentor commented as UP dished out 17 assists in the ball game, led by rookie Terrence Fortea with four.

Lucero paced the Maroons with 14 points on 75-percent shooting, all coming from inside the paint. The Fil-Am forward also added six rebounds, one assist, and one block. Co-captain Rivero ended with 14 markers as well to go with three boards, three steals, and one assist. Meanwhile, Cansino chipped in ten markers, two rebounds, and a steal.

Escamis had 16 points, six steals, and two assists for the Red Warriors in the losing effort, with three triples and six steals. Kyle Paranada added 13 markers, one assist, and one steal, while Harvey Pagsanjan also added 12 points.

The Fighting Maroons (3–1) will look for four straight wins, as they next face the Adamson Soaring Falcons (1–3) on Tuesday, 4pm, also at the Mall of Asia Arena.
